DevelopmentsJumped back and forth through a couple of things, yesterday, but mostly spent more time working on the level builder. Things are starting to look a little more varied, and thankfully the addition of vertical scrolling has added a little bit more. I'm currently worried about making sure the levels are completable, as I haven't yet added an AI player run-through of the level, to ensure it's at least playable. I'll have to do that next, I suppose. In the meantime, I've been ensurin...Views 21, Upvotes 7

DevelopmentsLast night I added some blocks to the Level Generator, which of course then required me to faff about adding extra rules to the player, and the baddies, and the other objects, to ensure they collide "roughly" correctly with the tilemap. It didn't take too long to get the basics in, but having to essentially rewrite the rules for half-a-dozen different object types meant for a long and complex bit of work. DevelopmentsYesterday, I completely rejigged the "Bounce" of SpikeDislike. Originally, the bounce was a simple Sine-wave, and has in fact been this in EVERY version of SpikeDislike, but this time I'm hoping to add a couple of new elements which have required a minor tweak in the usual ball bouncing mechanic. This isn't something to be taken lightly, as I had to be absolutely sure that the end result still "felt" like Classic SpikeDislike. At the moment it's a teensy bit floaty compared with ...Views 43, Upvotes 6

A couple of months ago, I mentioned this game in passing..
(URL "https://AGameAWeek.com/2009/08/y2w2-tetripong/">TetriPong)
And immediately started looking into remaking it.
It was just after I'd released ChuckABall, was midway through BounceABall, and considered this as a possible extra "ABall" game to fit alongside them.
.. Then I got sidetracked by the NeonBike game, and I didn't bother going back.
.. Then last week, Tetris Battle came out on OUYA, and I was going "aw, dangit.. Missed my ch...

RE : Flappy Bird
Blog
9th February 2014
I have no issues with the game.
It's a bit shit, but then so is SpikeDislike.. SpikeDislike is "ball bounces, move right..." and has little or no substance beyond that.
Of course, I then added a wonderful combo system, and then made a sequel with oodles of lovely new gameplay styles and plenty of options and such, but at it's heart it's still the same game it always was. Ball bounces, move right...
In many ways, so is flappy bird.
Flappy bird is "that helicopter game", but with harder obstacles to ...

I don't normally do "Postmortem" type blog posts, but figured I might as well start.
Not sure whether this will become a regular thing, or not, but I thought it'd be nice to keep track of what happens after I post each game.
In future I might leave it until a good few days have passed, but the world of AGameAWeek tends to flow fairly rapidly. We'll have to judge it as it happens.
Anyway, welcome to the newest section of AGameAWeek, where I take a look at the stats and things, to help figure out if the...

Giving Up..
Blog
18th July 2013
I don't give up, very often, but on this occasion, it's unfortunately going to happen to my big Month-Long project.
I seem to have narrowed the problem down to the following issue.
... Wasn't hard enough!
It seems that, nowadays, I can only tackle a project if it's got enough of a challenge attached.
Either a game has to be coded in a stupidly small amount of time, or the game needs to have lots of new things required, to keep my interest held.

You're probably wondering, by now, with all this wonderful "Monkey" stuff that I've been banging on about for the past month, where the heck my iOS offerings are.
Well, while it's true that Monkey does indeed make the coding a heck of a lot easier, there's still another matter to attend to.
The dreaded "iTunes Connect" area! ARGH!!!!
You've probably read enough of my rants to know that iDev isn't easy.
There are licenses to deal with. "Provision" codes, Certificates, all manner of stupid fiddly thing...

So, here we go again.
We're up to Year 5, and hopefully we'll get a full year out of it, this year (nnngh).
With Monkey, we get a chance to go back over our previous games, and remake them for a new audience, with iOS, Android and Browser based versions. I expect this will prove to be an exciting year.
Given that we can play at showing off, what games do you think would work best, and adapt well to the new touchy/mouse based gameplay options?
Or, what games could prove to be an obscure tricky challen...
