8th April 2010
(note, this is a bit waffley, and tends to jump about from point to point!!)
Today I've been working on the editor.
It's been a bit of a challenge, trying to think of every little think you might use, and also the keys for all of it, but I think it's coming along quite well.
Draw with the mouse to draw, left for the selected tile, right for blank.

Blocks and Spikes are in the engine now, as are the default sound effects!
Seems a bit of a long time for Blocks and Spikes, but those Blocks are always more complicated than they oughta be!
Work is coming along at the regular rate, but I'm now starting to think about the frontend of the game. Not entirely sure what I'll be doing for it.
I might try to replicate the DS's menu screen, since that seemed to work out nicely.

That's the last time I did a Mailbag post!
Blinkin' eck!
Over the past 6/7 months, I've occasionally dipped into the mailbag and plucked out little snippets, but I figured it was about time I did a proper one.

I've been meaning to start mentioning McCoy's AGameAWeek games for a few weeks, now, but am usually too busy on a Wednesday to think about it. D'oh!!
No matter... Today I'm at work, and have incredibly managed to remember, so here's this weeks.
(URL "https://nmccoy.net/2010/03/10/game-07-avoid-spikes/">Avoid Spikes) is one of those "uhoh!" games that regulars here will be all too familiar with.
They usually occur when you've spent too long on a project, and would rather it wasn't rush...

A bit of a chore, this week, to be honest.
I started on a game, expecting it to be nice and fun, but it's not really been all that great.
Instead it's been one of those "By the numbers" type things, and there's not really anything special about it, at all..
Aww well, not to worry, it's still a game!

This week a suggestion from Authentic Kaizen, who suggests having a neon styled platform game, with bubble bobble style components.
The game has taken a few turns during the week, changing from spike induced terror, a game with a frog like creature, and a whole lot more besides!
It now appears to be settling down quite nicely into some kind of obscure chaos.
Hurray for chaos!!

Or rather, he needs one, but doesn't quite have one.
That's on tomorrow morning/tonight's list of things to do.
Otherwise we've got sounds, graphics, music, levels, level progression, bonus level sets and more.
Everything's nice and happy!

Many many years ago (about 20?!) I played a game called Painter on a mate's BBC Micro.
Haven't played the thing since, but what the hey, here's the "Done in a day" remake!
I had intended to do a bigger project, and in fact that project is nearly done, but the lack of time made me postpone the larger project for a week, while it all gets done.
So, quicky game this week.

Imagine if all your favourite Arcade games were in fact Slot Machine games.
Arcade Slots reproduces a handful of games in this style. With games ranging from Frogger to Hogan's Alley, there's plenty to keep your playing.

Those expecting another Saturday filled with happy retro memories have a long wait.
I took the week off!
Mostly because coding 18 games within 3 weeks takes quite a lot out of you, but also 'cos my DS finally gave up trying to hold onto the tiny shred of hinge it had remaining. (ie, it did that whole "R-trigger side snap" thing that DSLite's tend to do!)
During this week, though, I've been thinking about Galaga.
On the one hand, it'd be nice to make a tiny retro version of the Amiga...

Platdude's Retro Collection was first released in November 2007. Each new release will contain a handful of new games.
How many will there be in the end? Who can say!
The latest release, Download Here, contains 18 games from the list below.
