AGameAWeek - How!?
Blog
26th June 2013
Every Single Week
Not Good AdviceThe following is not advice, and should not be taken as such. People often ask me how I manage to do AGameAWeek. Particularly, how I manage to cram everything into a single week, and then somehow manage to do exactly the same thing every other week, without going crazy. What follows might possibly help you understand a little more of what goes on in the world of AGameAWeek. Or it might just be a whole bunch of rambling waffling text. Not sure!! ...Views 73, Upvotes 11

Note : This app is included with my Monkey Skeleton, so if you've already grabbed that, you needn't bother grabbing it again!
If you're trying to write games for all these different systems that Monkey can handle, you've probably wanted to shout at Apple and Google for having created so many stupid sodding icon sizes.
It's enough to drive you crazy!!
When I first started building my Monkey Framework, I figured it'd be handy to have a program to create all these silly little things.
This is that!

I wanted to have made a nice big super-sized sequel, this week, but I got sidetracked.
For starters, I played a lot of Animal Crossing, so there's that!!
But that wasn't all, as this week's game took an alarming amount of time to settle into a groove.

Hoppy Bobby on iOS!
Blog
22nd June 2013
Now you can hop from your pocket, as Hoppy Bobby makes his way onto iOS!
The initial release is FREE, so you've no excuse not to grab it.
At a later point, I'd like to make a bigger-longer-better adventure mode, and add achievements and things, too. That'll be a Pay-for edition, but for now the original's there, and it's just as swear-inducing as ever!

As unplanned as AGameAWeek usually is, I at least have a rough idea of what'll be occurring.
Tuesdays, release a game. Wednesday's think about a game idea. Thursday/Friday start a game. Saturday/Sunday bulk the game out where necessary/possible, and Monday finish things up before we release it on Tuesday and start it all over again.
Along the way, we get trips into the AGameAWeek Gold archive, and there are other oddities like the Uninteresting Wallpapers, and other silly little things.

Time for an update to my Monkey Framework!
This week I noticed that, having upgraded my version of Monkey recently, Android's Back Button was no longer being recognised, so I took a bit of time to figure out why that was happening, and updated the Framework to suit the new methods.

Apologies that this post has taken me so long to publish.
I actually wrote most of it about 3 months ago, when I first released SpikeDislike2, but it's been sat on my Mac on a Sticky Note, and I kinda forgot all about it!
I remembered it, the other day, when I submitted SpikeDislike2-Lite to Apple.
What follows is a checklist/guide for compiling your (URL "https://monkeycoder.co.nz">Monkey-coded) game onto iOS.

It's like playing around with a time machine, but without the risk of destroying the entire universe, simply because you happened to sneeze near a butterfly, or something!
Today, we find two great classics.

Another week, another sequel.
This week, we're revisiting the puzzle-maze world of Kee, Bo and Ard (Occasionally spelled "Key, Bo and Ard" due to me forgetting the spelling of the green character's name!)
I also need a couple of features tested, so there's quite a bit of rambling included below this post!

Although I am sort of planning things ahead of time, I'm not really doing a good job with the things I'm planning.
In the majority of cases, the better AGameAWeek games seem to be those spur of the moment games that I cobble together fairly quickly.
Anything over-planned seems to die a death, halfway through!
At the start of May, I planned to do two fairly large projects.
Both of those projects have remained untouched for at least a couple of weeks.
Whoops!

For the most part, there's some real stinkers in amongst this lot.
But every so often, we'll come across a real gem.

A remake, this week, of a popular old game, but one which appears to have lost it's powerups along the way.
The game plays well enough, but it feels somewhat lacking.
Perhaps a little community-driven inspiration might help bulk it back up again?

AGameAWeek Gold takes a trip through my archive of games, and plucks out any games that may have been previously released on this day in history.
Sometimes it finds recent games from the past few years of me doing AGameAWeek.
Other times, however, it finds really really really old games, from a time when the concept of doing a new game every week wasn't even a gleam in my eye!

During a moment of boredom, I wondered how long it'd take to remake my lovely Testcard Generator.
I attempted it in Monkey, and realised it wouldn't work very well given that I can't save an image.
Then I tried it in BlitzMax, but that wouldn't allow me to work with images bigger than the desktop. (My Laptop is 1366x768, and I wanted at least 1920x1080)
In the end I opted for Blitz3D.
Blitz3D lets me work in practically any resolution I can imagine, while scaling it nicely to fit on my screen.
Lovely ...

Or to give it it's full name, "One of These Will Kill You!".
This week's game is a semi-remake of sorts, but one which feels a little more complete than the original version.
Originally created as a PlayMyCode game, this version adds bonuses, along with some more obvious gameplay mechanics.
You should be able to follow along, this time around!

Oooh, nearly forgot about this feature!
Whoops!
Anyway, as I was sat wondering which of my current two projects to tackle, this morning, I inevitably decided to waste a few minutes making something entirely unrelated.
This month's wallpaper used two separate programs!!
First, the Windows program PaintShop Pro 7 was used to doodle the sprite, and get the image up to a nice big resolution, then the iPad App Pixlr Express+ was used to add a nice filter over the top.
Does that make it more interesting?...

Sad face.
I'm supposed to be adding a new word game, every week, but this week's IGN Sillyness resulted in me spending literally hours replying to a whole bunch of emails, and trying to keep tabs on everything as it all went a wee bit crazy.
To be fair, I could've just spent ten minutes replying to those, but I do like to waffle in my email replies!!
As a result, I didn't actually get around to much coding, ...

Evil pirates are everywhere.
You know what really irks me, though?
The way the pirates slap their name onto your game.
They don't dig into the innards and fiddle with things that would intrude on the player's experience, but they do slap their name on the download filename.
Eg, I could make a game called Mr Hippo's Happy Adventure, and the pirate download would end up as "[MrKipper] - Mr Hippo's Happy Adventure.ipa", thus giving MrKipper the fanfare, and taking it away from me.
Grrr!!
It's hard enou...
