In order to do a new Centipong justice, I need to add nice level transitions, mushroom popping, and other nice stuff. It could probably do with a number of ALChoons, too, to keep it lively. As such, and given what day it is, tomorrow, I've decided to hold off on the game until next week, so I have ample time to do the game justice. Hopefully you don't mind.

All the trailers, screenshots and the hype from the devlogs for the generic snake game might have confused the regular readers of the blog what is all the fuss about. I guess the hype was about the story in the generic snake game.

It's been a long long time since I did a bog standard Snake clone, and yesterday's code session reminded me of just how utterly simplistic a snake clone can be. Today I'll be making the tail follow the player, as it currently doesn't clear out as it goes, making things much harder for the player. Once that works, I'll be adding more tail-pieces as the player eats more, and then coming up with a soundtrack that matches the presentation of the game.

I think I've got the enemy ball AI working to a moderately decent degree, but of course I can't be 100% sure until the rest of the game is coded, and I'm actually facing him as an enemy. Most of the day's coding was focused on making the enemy do corners a little better. Even with padded out corners, it was still managing to fall into the abyss much more than I'd like. Always evolving, the Framework needs more Scoreboard tweaking. I was hoping to get this done, over the past week, but the Radial Warning complications and lack of gameplay, ended up shifting my focus.

Here is the tool .zip contains Windows exe, BlitzMax Sourcecode and this font. Hopefully the font's creator doesn't dislike that I've included it. If you find a better font (eg, one with the little serifs on) then let me know.

During level generation, I usually set walls/floors to "1", and then pad things out around those 1's. Yesterday, I struggled to figure out why enemy placements were so very few and far between, until I realised that I was randomising the floor tiles between 1 and 6. The enemies were only appearing atop the rare 1 floor tiles. *tsk* silly me.

Struggling to get all the backups, installs and more, that a new Laptop requires, I'm going to have to skip this week. Again.. How many skipped weeks is that, now!? Sorry! Still, it gives me enough time to come up with a slightly better artistic style for the Fridge Hopping game. A nice background, maybe?! Fancy!! I should also be able to add some nice pickups and things, and hopefully make the game a fun enjoyable adventure. .. Maybe!

No coding, last night, as I realised I didn't have any of my iOS Backups on the new laptop. The whole process isn't as scary as it once was, and iTunes is gradually learning to behave itself over the decade or so since I started using it. But it's still slow as crap..

I haven't really got a goal in mind for this game, yet, and it's currently just a case of "Keep going, and avoid the gunfire". It's quite fun to play, but there's no real sense of accomplishment. Tonight and tomorrow will hopefully bring that into place. Additionally, I'll probably give the player a health bar, since 3 lives really don't last very long in this game!!

The new laptop was supposed to be arriving today, giving me yesterday to finish off most of the important pieces of this week's game. Instead, the new laptop turned up yesterday, meaning I pretty much wasted the entire day playing Mr Reinstaller.

Not really 100% sure what's going on here, if I'm honest, but the game now features a pogo-stick-hopping refrigerator. .. Because.. .. ... *shrugs* Tomorrow I need to come up with a more interesting set of gameplay elements than "Try not to fall into the chasm". Some proper enemies would help, I imagine.
