In what can only be described as a complete disappointment, I've given up with BlitzMax. Technically, the engine's great, the language runs fast, and things are good. But.. It doesn't run on some systems.. And some of the features I'd really like to use run really stupidly slow on certain other systems. It's a big downer. And it's certainly most notable with Horizontal Shooter, and it's need to have a background that can be (shock horror) turned off! It'd be less annoying if the Slow systems were ...

This week, I haven't entered the Wednesday Workshop. Instead I had a try at the Monthly one (#013), which asked us to create a game with lots of guns, and bullets and shootyness. Since I'd already done a decent enough shooter the other day (H~S) I decided to try my hand at something a little different. <a href="https://AGameAWeek.com/windev/sheriffmunky.png"><img src="https://AGameAWeek.com/windev/sheriffmunky_thumb.png"></a>

Due to all manner of obscure things happening this week (A HD Crash being one of them..) this week's effort isn't anywhere near as good as last week's!! Still, a game's a game, even without a titlescreen, music, sound, an ending, scores, or anything else like that.. .. *cough* ... <img src="https://socoder.net/workshop/dlds/169_afros_chair.gif"> A guy called Afro, over at Socoder had modelled a few little 3D objects. A while ago, I made <a href="https://AGameAWeek.com/?p=14">this</a>. Horizontal Shooter. Fly about, shoot the bad guys, guard the good guys. A nice enough game, lovely lines all over, but somehow lacking in something extra. This week.. I added something extra!

A quick update, albeit not a proper one.. If you download (URL "https://socoder.net/uploads/1/jnkplat08ds.zip">this new version) of JNKPlat, you can use the inbuilt editor to play around with all the nice new features I've been adding in, lately. I've not really gotten around to building a bunch of levels, yet, though! So you'll have to wait for that. I'll be posting a new version next week with some new packs of levels, and maybe even a bunch more new features, too! Head inside to find the list...

I'm not entirely sure who came up with this idea, but it's been roaming around the internet for the past few years. This week's Wednesday Workshop #165 was to create a game using only one button. So, Heck, why not! ?? I grabbed the generic Cowbell Hero logo from the net. I'm still not sure who originally designed it, but there it is. In went Platdude, and a few silly songs, and then a few extra songs from the folk at ModArchive.com, and within just a few days the job was done. ?? <...

This week, Socoder's <a href="https://socoder.net/?Workshop=Challenge&Week=163">Wednesday Workshop (#163)</a> challenge was to create a game with Money in it. I initially was going to create a top-down dungeon romp, but as the plan grew and grew in scale, I scrapped it and just ended up making a nice quick platformer instead! ?? <img src="https://socoder.net/workshop/dlds/163_mr_money_grabber.gif"> Mr Money Grabber features you rushing through the level collecting all the coins...

I tried to keep a blog. It didn't work. It's no surprise, though. I've never been one to keep a working active blog. No matter, I'll try something else. Welcome to A Game A Week.com I'm pretty much already producing games at a fast enough pace, what with the Wednesday Workshop and all. So I figured I might as well get a bit of publicity out of it by adding a nice shiny noticeable domain name! Will it work? We'll have to wait and see. Here's the ...

Tomb Raider meets Pitfall! <img src="https://AGameAWeek.com/windev/crofty1.png"> Retro Raider took a few days to get into a decent build, and then over the course of a few weeks I added lots of extra little chunky bits. <img src="https://AGameAWeek.com/windev/crofty2.png"> Recently I've been tweaking it even more. There's now a handful of levels, a few collectables, doors, keys, and even a little Ghost Replay/Time Trial mode. <img src="https://AGameAWeek.com/windev/crofty3...

For starters, let me just point out that Alien Deathmatch has still been slowly updating over the past couple of weeks. It's strange that a single game has taken up so much of my time. I guess that once you find the right type of game, you're more motivated than usual. Still, more weeks playing with 1 game = less time to get some actual new games coded. As such, there's not really been a whole lot to report over the past week or so. No new games, no new ideas, nothing. I had initially planned to do ...

If Centipong was a simplistic looking game with added 3D, Blockman would be the exact opposite. What happens when you take 2 classic Atari 2600 games, and stick them together? Centipong mixes Centipede and Pong to create a really weird almost-psychedelic game. Smash the ball at the Centipede repeatedly.

<em>Note : This is much more Game-Specific than my regular posts!</em> Bombliss is one of my favourite alternate Tetris games. It has all the playability of the original Tetris, and it also has bombs, and chain reactions and things, too. Last night, I opened up the Tetris sourcecode for the Retro Collection, and started hacking away for it's Xtra Mode. (renamed so it looked more obvious on the menu) For reference, to start a Xtra Mode game, either hit X to start the game instead of A.....

The whole Gabby Gets a Turkey (logo on last week's post) game is being scrapped due to bizarre scale issues!? A white cat in white snow is a nice idea, except when you realise that a 16x16 pixel head is going to need a huge non-existant body behind it!? The whole thing just felt really odd, and I decided to just scrap it instead. I know that the Drunken Coders people hate entries that are "X game + Xmassy theme added on later", and I came up with the Gabby game so's it definitely didn't feel like a tac...

Those expecting another Saturday filled with happy retro memories have a long wait. I took the week off! Mostly because coding 18 games within 3 weeks takes quite a lot out of you, but also 'cos my DS finally gave up trying to hold onto the tiny shred of hinge it had remaining. (ie, it did that whole "R-trigger side snap" thing that DSLite's tend to do!) During this week, though, I've been thinking about Galaga. On the one hand, it'd be nice to make a tiny retro version of the Amiga classic "Deluxe G...

Another week, another pile of retro-mania! You get the idea by now, 6 extra games and the odd bugfix. I had to redo a lot of Tetris, this week, since I'd ballsed up quite a bit of it last week! But it's all working rather well now, so you can happily settle down to a nice long game on Extreme modem and it'll now actually get faster as you head up the levels! And the T shape's in it this week, too! The Joust game's as good as it should be, without being much more. There's ...

I managed to fix up the Dot Popping game, so that's back in the main menus, and I also added a few others, including Pong and Tetris, since the commenters below seemed to really want to have a decent Tetris game. I decided to start a Dev diary here, for all my DS Developing. I figured people would eventually stumble across it, and start reading away at all the fun coding. Either that, or they'll completely ignore these bits, and just download the Experimental stuff like they usually do. Either way, this is going to be a part dev-diary, part progress report, and part release schedule for all things DS. I currently have 4 DS Projects on the go. When I created JNKPlat 3D (about 3/4 way down (URL "https://AGameAWeek.com/?page_id=2">here)) I intended to have an end-credits sequence. So I composed this nice theme for that purpose. Unfortunately I have an odd knack of never finishing off games, so an end credit sequence never appeared in the game. For the new JNKPlat I grabbed this theme and turned it into a smaller Mod, but some people like it, so here's the original version in it's MP3 format. Sometimes you forget about games! I worked on this game for a while, back in early 2003. The idea was to nick the whole Pokemon idea, and create a bizarre Coding based adventure game. So, I nicked the graphics, too! <img src="shots/exp-code.png"> I also added a bunch of music that I'd grabbed from Aminet, and designed a nice Logo. I got the map pretty much working as expected, and even got it so that text would appear in a little box. It kinda looks like my recent workshop "Quest" games...

I've started to go through all my stuff, and I decided that, rather than just list everything, I'd try to create some kind of descriptive history of all my games, be they completed fun stuffs, or just failed experiments.? You might even start to see some new stuff appear here that you've never seen before!? ? In the meantime I've built up the JNKPlat section, as well as the More Games page. I'm not sure if I'll bother doing the Wed.Workshop page.? Or perhaps I'll just list a few of my favourites. ? Lik...
