Meanwhile...
I've been watching a lot of Any Austin on the YouTubes, and one thing he tends to do is explore Open World games, enjoying the scenery and such.
I've watched a fair number of his Red Dead Redemption 2 videos and it's got me wanting to have a wander, so about 4 or so days ago (17th April), I headed to Steam, paid the £19.99, and then went "Holy holy holy bananas... A hundred and twenty gigabytes?!!!"
Thankfully, the ROGAlly still has a lot of onboard storage, since the majority of its stored content is on the MicroSD card, so I left it to download the huge file.
.. About 4 hours later, I came back to it, and ..
.. Powered it on..
...
......?
It was at 18% downloaded.
I toggled with various Windows settings, sat it back down and gave it about half a day.
.. 30% downloaded. I could see where this was going.
Yesterday, I opened the game up, and immediately closed it down.
I then headed immediately to a Save Game repository (Nexus Mods), so I could actually wander around and enjoy the game instead of watching a 17 hour bloody movie with occasional "now walk over here to begin the next cutscene". Good grief, I hate that aspect of modern games.
So, all that faffing around later, I had a good old wander, yesterday. (21st April, 5 days after purchase .. Used to be quicker getting a bus into town, buying a game in the shop, then getting the bus back home again!)
...
The scenery is really quite something, though currently I'm being shot at, every time I dare wander anywhere interesting looking.
I think I'll have to search to see if there's a "cheat" (do games do cheats, any more?) to reduce the level of getting shot at all the bloomin' time.
Sure do wish more games had a "Just let me explore" button.
Also, the ROGAlly's locked to a boring resolution because my bedroom TV is a low resolution.
That feeling of "Hey, get a 4K Monitor!" is bopping away at my noggin' again.
Kinda tempted to get GTAV running on there, next. Have a bit more open-world wandering.
[Dave and Greenie are sat in Dave's living room. Dave's watching a map on the computer screen]
Green: There's still no tracking, is there?
Dave: Nope.
Green: Can we not be doing, literally, anything else right now?
Dave: Nope.
[Dave sighs and walks around the room a few times.]
Green: And it's not exactly Amazon is it? These packages are being done by people from their homes. They're not going to be sending them next-day, tracked.
Dave: [still pacing] I know that. We all know that, Greenie. It's just.. I hate waiting.
Green: Then, perhaps do something productive?
Dave: Yeah. Maybe that's a good idea.
Green: Uhoh.
[Dave rummages through shelves under the computer desk, and pulls out a pile of disjointed chaotic electronic kit.]
Green: What's all this for?
Dave: These bits here were for the prototype ScrunchCake Sentinal.
Green: Oh goody. Destructive chaos.
Dave: No, it's ok, I can reuse the sensor technology.
[Dave yanks a piece of the tech from off the board, and twists and turns some more pieces]
Dave: See, if I convert the sensor technology from "evil thieves trying to steal games from my shop" into "packages I need to track"..
Green: This is definitely not going to work. You don't even know where your packages are coming from.
Dave: No, no, this'll work.
[Dave continues to fiddle with the equipment, before setting the new device down in the middle of the living room]
Dave: Tada!
[A red light flashes on the top of the mangled mass of chaos]
Green: And that's a tracker?
Dave: Sure is.
Green: Is it tracking?
Dave: [tapping the device] Um. Yeah!
Green: I don't think it is.
Dave: Sure it is. Look, it's flashing red. That means the package has not yet been delivered.
Green: We already knew that.
[The doorbell rings, and Dave and Green stare at the flashing red light.]
Green: Are you gonna get the door?
[The light changes to yellow]
Dave: Yeay!!
[End Credits as Dave leaps to answer the door]
