Yesterday didn't seem to end up with anything productive at all, though I did spend a lot of time working on the background stuff.
Currently the engine runs at an unsteady speed, based on how much you type, such that every keypress is 100% instantly displayed onscreen.
Now, however, I need to start thinking about other elements, like the more gamey-games towards the end of the month. .. And with December 1st rapidly approaching, I kinda need to get that done ASAP!!!
So, yesterday was a lot of the groundwork for that.
I also need to decide if I'm having audio or not. I know that sounds really easy, and a "Yes or No" type of none-issue, but it puts one incredibly unusual quirk in the way of everything..
And that is, of course, Apple!!
See, in Safari, you need to "click" something on the screen, in order that the website is allowed to switch on the audio.
In Shoebox, there isn't anything, but in order to start a game, the user has to click, so that's ok.
In Browsercade and JSE games, there's a very obvious "Click me! Click me!" button, which inevitably leads to people trying to then use the mouse to navigate the menu, click to start a game, then get baffled when the game is key/controller based.
In our Typing Tutor.. well.. I'd rather not make the player reach for their mouse/touchscreen at any point, so.. How do I do that, then?!
Hmm.
(* for iOS, assume Touch instead of Click!)
That's kept me pondering for a couple of weeks, now, and the prospect of having a "Click to start" seems like the only realistic way to do it.
I have one little animation in mind, which might help set things straight, and if I can pull that off, we'll be sorted. I'll have to bulk up the number of animation frames for that, though!!!

Lyrics : First verse and chorus by me. Rest by ChatGPT.
[Green enters to find Dave clearing away top-hatted chickens]
Green: Matt's definitely going to notice all this excavation under RCHomes
Dave: No time to worry about that! We need to get ready for the revolving gates!
Green: I thought we were sticking to statues?
Dave: These ARE statues. Gate statues!
Green: No, they're gates..
Dave: They're made out of marble. That makes them statues.
Green: I'm surprised they don't have arms, too.
Dave: (gasps) You couldn't have said that before I ordered them?
Green: Sorry.
[Scene Two]
Ext. Dave's Bunker - Garden Area
[Dave is assembling elaborate golden marble gates]
Dave: Pass me the coke!
Green: What's it for this time?
Dave: Hinge lubrication, obviously
Green: Do we need the porcupine here, today?
Dave: Well yes, he's the doorman. Gotta have security, and he's really great with his quills. He can SPIKE anyone trying to get in.
Green: In his dinner jacket?
Dave: Not everyone deserves a spike. Not even Andy.
Green: Not even Andy? Then who DOES deserve a spike?
Dave: I guess we'll find out.
[Scene Three]
Ext. Dave's Bunker - Gate Area
[The gates spin majestically while the top-hatted chickens parade through]
Green: Your great big statue collection is certainly coming together, huh?
Dave: Yep!
Green: And the heavenly cat seems to be doing a great job at guiding everyone through the door.
Dave: Sure, health and safety, you know.
Green: It helps that it's still on string, so it literally just being pulled around by the revolving door.
Dave: It's a gate, but yeah!
Green: What's tomorrow then?
Dave: "Twelve, Time to Delve!"
Green: Let me guess - more tunnelling under RCHomes?
Dave: No no, we're getting a mole statue. In a mining helmet.
