I thought I had a good idea, here. Make a path and have a single button to follow it. (The A Button)
Tap tap tap and the player moves along the path.
The quirk is that bits of the path have been folded, and you need to use the cursor keys to flip and fold the maze so you can get through it.
So I made a quick generator and gave it a fair shake of the sauce bottle.
But nothing.
The game doesn't feel like it works.
Or at least, to me it doesn't.
But what do you think?
The house is usually really easy to reach, just by taking a few steps and getting lucky with the path layout.
I'm not keen on how this works, and/or doesn't work.
I think this is one of those ideas where you'd need to build complicated and puzzling levels that have been hand-made, instead of generated badly by a bit of my awful code
There's a game in here, somewhere. I just haven't found it. .. within the few hours that I worked on this game!
[Dave is surrounded by colourful paper, intently folding a piece into what looks like a misshapen bird. Green enters.]
Green: (surprised) Dave? What are you up to now?
Dave: (excitedly) I'm mastering the ancient art of origami, Green! It's like programming, but with paper.
Green: (skeptically) Right, because folding paper is exactly like coding a computer.
Dave: (defensively) It is! Look, I've already made a Cola Genie summoning circle... I think.
Green: (sighing) Dave, that looks more like a crumpled napkin than a summoning circle.
Dave: (ignoring Green) Hey, can you pass me that instruction book? I think I need to refold the Quantum Leap section.
Green: (alarmed) Quantum Leap section? Dave, it's origami, not time travel!
[Scene Two]
Int. Dave's Room - Afternoon
[The room is covered in paper creations. Dave is tangled in a long strip of paper.]
Dave: (triumphantly) Almost there, Green! Just need to fold this last bit into a fractal pattern.
Green: (sarcastically) I don't think they did fractals in ancient Japan, Dave.
Dave: (excitedly) Ooh, that gives me an idea! What if I program the PC to calculate the perfect folds? It'll be art within art!
Green: (panicking) Dave, no! Put the paper down!
Dave: (ignoring Green) Don't worry, I've linked the origami book to my computer. What could go wrong?
Green: (deadpan) Oh, I don't know. Maybe accidentally creating a paper version of your apartment's layout?
[Scene Three]
Int. Dave's Room - Evening
[The room looks like a paper factory exploded. Origami creations of all shapes and sizes cover every surface. Dave is beaming proudly.]
Dave: (proudly) There! Perfect!
Green: (squinting at one of the creations) Is that supposed to be a chicken or a monkey?
Dave: (excitedly) Look over here. I've recreated the entire cast of Star Trek in origami!
Green: (sighing) Dave, it looks like a flock of mutant paper pigeons had a party.
Dave: (suddenly panicking) Wait! What if the Cola Genie gets lost in this paper maze? Quick, we need to make an origami trail of Coke cans!
Green: (giving up) You know where I'll be.
[As Green leaves, Dave turns to his computer]
Dave: (to the PC) Don't worry, we'll summon the Cola Genie with our origami skills. Now, where did I put those paper saws?
Green: (shouting from the hallway) Scissors. They're called scissors.
